Wates Group appoints Robert Stone to oversee public sector works
Wates Group has appointed Robert Stone as its new Head of Public Sector and National Frameworks, reinforcing the company’s commitment to the delivery of public sector infrastructure and strategic national frameworks.
Stone brings over 30 years of experience across both public and private sector construction, including senior leadership roles on some of the UK’s largest housing, regeneration, and defence programmes. Most recently, he served as Director of Technical Services at Homes England, where he oversaw construction delivery, design quality, sustainability, estate management, and strategic planning. He also held a place on several high-level advisory boards, including the Government Construction Board and Government Property Leaders Board.
In his new role, Stone will work alongside Group Public Sector Director Stephen Beechey to drive growth and engagement with key public sector clients, including Homes England, the Ministry of Justice, the Department for Education, and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. He will also support the company’s position across key procurement frameworks such as Pagabo, P23, Procure Partnerships Framework (PPF), and Crown Commercial Services (CCS).
Stone’s previous roles include Head of Estates at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), where he contributed to the Defence Estate Optimisation Programme (DEOP), and project leadership positions on large-scale education and healthcare projects with Tier 1 contractors. Notably, he also led the £1bn Eastwick & Sweetwater regeneration scheme in Stratford as part of the post-Olympics legacy development.
The public sector accounts for approximately 70% of Wates Group’s overall business, covering new build, refurbishment, and maintenance work across social infrastructure. Stone’s appointment is expected to strengthen the group’s delivery capacity and deepen its strategic relationships across government clients.
