Saint-Gobain unveils gas-fired fixings for EWI installation

Saint-Gobain Exterior Solutions has launched a gas-fired fixing system for external wall insulation (EWI), replacing traditional drill-and-fix installation with a single-shot method.

The system is designed to secure insulation boards directly to the substrate without pre-drilling, with independent installation trials indicating that it can reduce installation times by around 30% compared with conventional drilled fixings.

The launch comes as demand for retrofit and external wall insulation continues to grow across the UK, with the new method intended to reduce installation time, noise and vibration on site.

Gas-fired fixings cut EWI installation time

Traditional EWI fixing involves drilling into the substrate before inserting and securing a fixing. The new system combines these stages into a single operation using a gas-fired fixing tool.

According to independent trials, the method can save around half a day on a typical home compared with traditional installation.

Caroline Rowley, Business Development Director at Saint-Gobain Exterior Solutions, said: “The retrofit sector is expanding rapidly as the UK continues its journey towards a more energy-efficient building stock. However, many of the installation methods used across the industry have remained largely unchanged for years.

“Our new Gas Fired Fixings installation method represents a genuine step forward for installers, contractors and clients alike. By significantly reducing installation times, lowering noise levels and minimising vibration exposure, we are helping contractors work more efficiently while also creating safer and more comfortable working environments.

“This launch reflects our continued commitment to innovation and to developing practical solutions that address real challenges faced by the market. We believe this technology has the potential to significantly improve external wall insulation installation across the UK.”

New fixing method reduces noise and vibration

The installation method has also been assessed for its impact on installer exposure to noise and vibration.

Independent acoustic testing found that the gas-fired system reduced noise levels by 9.2 decibels compared with traditional installation methods.

Hand-arm vibration assessments recorded a 73% reduction in vibration exposure for installers compared with conventional drilling. Prolonged exposure to hand-arm vibration can contribute to conditions including hand-arm vibration syndrome and other musculoskeletal problems.

The system has also undergone independent third-party evaluation and achieved ECO Innovation status.

Saint-Gobain said the fixing method is intended to help contractors improve productivity while reducing disruption for occupants during external wall insulation and retrofit work.
