MP tours Cambridgeshire development as construction progresses
South Cambridgeshire MP Pippa Heylings has visited the Springstead Village development in Cherry Hinton to see construction progress on the 1,200-home scheme.
Springstead Village is being developed on a 138-acre site that was previously part of Cambridge Airport.
The scheme will deliver 1,200 homes alongside parks, community facilities and retail space.

Representatives from Bellway Latimer, the joint venture behind the development, hosted the MP on the Wednesday 19th August.
The visit began at the project office, where the development team provided an update on the scheme before showing Heylings around the first two residential phases off Cherry Hinton Road.
A total of 295 homes have now been completed across the two phases, alongside a neighbourhood park and the Springstead Community Living Room.
The temporary community facility is being provided ahead of the permanent community centre planned as part of a later phase of the development.
Construction underway on third phase
Heylings also toured the third phase, where construction work is currently underway.
The phase will comprise 292 homes, a local centre including the permanent community centre and two retail units, as well as two neighbourhood parks, allotments and a clubhouse building.
The wider development includes cycle and pedestrian routes, air source heat pumps, wetlands and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).

Pippa Heylings said: “It is encouraging to see Springstead Village taking shape and to meet the team delivering it. Placemaking and building new communities like this right matters enormously, and it was fantastic to see a green development with air source heat pumps, wetlands, SuDS, parks, cycle routes, allotments and play areas.
“I’m impressed to see a community space up and running early in collaboration with local leaders from Cherry Hinton and Teversham. Integration is key. I’ve been clear with ministers and developers alike: infrastructure cannot be an afterthought to housing.
“As South Cambridgeshire continues to expand, I’ll keep pressing for the infrastructure like GP surgeries, school places, water and sewage capacity to be delivered alongside new homes, not as an afterthought.”
Community engagement
The project team said engagement with local communities had formed part of the development process, including workshop-style meetings during the design stage and a public arts programme involving local primary schools, youth groups and other organisations.
Paul Keating, Engineering Manager for Bellway Latimer, said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome South Cambridgeshire MP Pippa Heylings to Springstead Village and to give her a tour of the development.
“The visit provided an opportunity for her to see how this carefully-planned neighbourhood is beginning to take shape, with 245 new homes now occupied by residents who are enjoying the public open spaces and community facilities that have been delivered so far.

“Engagement with the local community has been integral to this project right from the start, from the workshop-style meetings which took place during the design process to the public arts programme involving local primary schools, youth groups and other organisations.
“We are committed to maintaining close links with the local community and key stakeholders throughout the project, and are grateful to Pippa for taking the time to visit Springstead Village so she could she for herself how our vision for this sustainable new community is already coming to life.”
