Morgan Sindall starts construction of new Stevenage leisure centre
Morgan Sindall Construction has started work on a new 6,330 sq m leisure centre in Stevenage, with the scheme due to complete in 2028.
The project, procured through the SCAPE Construction framework, will replace the existing separate wet and dry leisure facilities with a single complex.
The new centre will include a 25-metre, 10-lane competition swimming pool with a floating floor and seating for 150 spectators, alongside a teaching pool and splash pad with sensory zones.

Other facilities will include a 250-station gym with consultation rooms, a six-court sports hall, three fitness studios, a dedicated spin room, soft play and an on-site café.
Post-tensioned pool hall
The scheme has been designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects with structural engineering support from Scott White and Hookins.
A key technical feature is the use of a post-tensioned structural solution for the pool hall, which will span up to 30 metres. The project team says this is the first known use of the approach for a pool hall of this type in the UK.
Construction will be carried out while the existing Stevenage Swimming Centre remains open to the public.
External works will include improvements to green space, cycle parking, on-site parking and a dedicated bus drop-off area for school groups.
Energy efficiency measures
The project will incorporate a range of measures aimed at reducing energy use and managing surface water.

These include photovoltaic panels, swales and rain gardens, alongside a new mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) system designed to improve the building’s energy efficiency.
The scheme forms part of wider regeneration activity in Stevenage and is one of the projects supported through the town’s Towns Fund programme.
Rod Pavey, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the Northern Home Counties, said: “We’re incredibly proud to have begun the construction of the new Stevenage Leisure Centre. This project plays a vital role in the transformation of Stevenage, and we’re delighted to be a part of it.
“Working closely with Stevenage Borough Council, we look forward to delivering a high-quality facility that will enrich the lives of local people and provide a welcoming, inclusive space for the whole community.”
Cllr Richard Henry, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council, said: “Today’s groundbreaking marks an exciting step towards delivering a landmark new leisure centre for Stevenage. This investment will provide first-class facilities for residents while supporting our wider vision to create an even better town for future generations.”
