Kier secures two-year extension to Birmingham highways maintenance contract
Kier has secured a two-year extension to its highways maintenance contract with Birmingham City Council, continuing its responsibility for the city’s road network while the council develops a longer-term arrangement.
Kier has provided highways maintenance services in Birmingham since April 2020.
The extension follows the Government’s decision not to continue the existing Highways Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract, giving the council additional time to procure a replacement arrangement.

The agreement covers maintenance and repair services across Birmingham’s roads, footways and other highway assets.
Birmingham highways contract covers 2,500km of roads
The contract includes highways and footway maintenance, emergency repairs, street lighting, drainage, arboriculture, winter maintenance and traffic management.
Kier’s services cover more than 2,500km of roads and 5,000km of footways, as well as 846 structures, three tunnels, 94,000 street lighting columns and 76,000 highway trees.
The contract also includes an option for Birmingham City Council to extend the arrangement by a further nine months to April 2029.
Cllr Rob Grant, cabinet member for transport at Birmingham City Council, said: “The state of our roads is a top priority for residents and businesses across the city. If we want to live in safe and welcoming communities, and for the city to function, we need roads and pavements in good condition.
“We have a huge network of highways used by buses, cyclists, wheelers and pedestrians and people want to see that we are investing in them and looking after them.

Kier to continue Birmingham road maintenance
The extension will provide continuity of highways maintenance while the council works towards securing a longer-term contract.
Barry Jupp, managing director for Highways at Kier Infrastructure, said: “We’re delighted to secure this two-year extension with Birmingham City Council, which is a reflection of the strong partnership we’ve built together since 2020.
“Birmingham is one of the UK’s largest road networks and we’re proud to continue playing our part in keeping people and communities connected.”
Ian Davies, general manager at Kier Infrastructure, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to build on the progress we’ve made managing the city’s vast infrastructure and asset network while working to enhance local communities and service-user experience.

This extension highlights the dedication of our teams and supply chain partners who deliver essential services for the city every day, and our focus will remain on delivering lasting value for the communities we serve.”
The contract extension follows the Department for Transport’s decision earlier this year to end the long-standing PFI arrangement between the department and Birmingham City Council.
Kier’s wider highways maintenance portfolio includes contracts with Norfolk County Council, North Northamptonshire Council, West Northamptonshire Council, Shropshire Council, Somerset Council, the London Borough of Barnet and Transport for London, alongside work across three National Highways regions.
