Kier has been appointed through the Department for Education’s (DfE) Construction Framework to deliver a new three-storey specialist education building for Imperial College London Mathematics School in Finchley, north London.

The project, being delivered in partnership with Imperial College London, will provide a permanent home for the school, which currently operates from temporary accommodation.

The specialist building will provide teaching, laboratory and study spaces for around 200 students aged 16 to 19.

It will also feature external landscaping designed to support informal learning, wellbeing and community outreach activities.

The building will be designed to support evening and weekend use, providing space for educational events, lectures and wider community programmes.

David Lee, headteacher at Imperial College London Mathematics School, said: “This permanent building will provide specialist spaces where young people can thrive.

“It will help us continue to build a strong community, bringing together students who share an enthusiasm for mathematics and science, a spirit of curiosity, and a love of thinking deeply, tackling challenging problems and exploring new ideas.”

The school officially opened in September 2023 and forms part of the DfE’s programme to develop a network of specialist maths schools across England.

The building will target net zero carbon in operation and incorporate low-carbon technologies, roof-mounted photovoltaics and a bio-solar roof.

Green roofs, green walls and enhanced landscaping will also be incorporated as part of measures designed to deliver Biodiversity Net Gain and exceed Urban Greening Factor targets.

Kier will also provide construction apprenticeships, T Level placements, work experience, careers outreach and community volunteering as part of the project.
