Three apprentices from North East contractor Compass Developments are gaining hands-on experience on one of the UK’s largest city centre regeneration projects as construction progresses on a new housing development at Riverside Sunderland.

The Cramlington-based contractor is delivering 34 homes within the Vaux neighbourhood after being appointed by igloo Regeneration.

The development is supported through the Housing Growth Partnership, alongside a Research and Development grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Construction of the homes, including 16 sustainable properties, is progressing and is scheduled for completion in August 2027.

Apprentices develop practical construction skills on live site

The project is providing practical experience for three joinery apprentices working alongside experienced tradespeople on the live construction site.

Scott Anderson, who has worked for Compass Developments for 11 years, began his career with the company as a labourer before retraining through a joinery apprenticeship at Ashington College. He is now preparing to take up a full-time joinery role with the contractor.

He is joined by first-year apprentice James Anderson, 18, and final-year apprentice Cameron Riach, 22, who are both studying at Tyne Coast College.

The apprentices have been working under the supervision of Contracts Manager Graham Walton and experienced joiners Graham Shickle and Michael Irwin as they develop practical skills across the residential scheme.

Contractor highlights investment in future construction workforce

Compass Developments, which delivers commercial, industrial and residential projects across the North East, said providing opportunities for apprentices remains an important part of its workforce development strategy.

Peter Young, Managing Director at Compass Developments, said: “We want to play our part in developing and retaining the next generation of talented workers, many of whom have been with the business for a number of years.

“By working on a large-scale regeneration project, Scott, James and Cameron gain real life industry experience, all of which accelerates their hands-on problem-solving skills.

“Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Scott has accepted a full-time position at Compass and we look forward to one day watching him pass on his skill set to future apprentices.”

The project forms part of the wider Riverside Sunderland regeneration programme, with the Vaux neighbourhood creating new homes as the former industrial site is transformed into a mixed-use city centre community.
