New County Durham affordable housing site builds careers as well as homes
A new-build development in Murton, County Durham is not only delivering 22 affordable homes but also helping to tackle the skills gap by creating hands-on training opportunities for young people in the construction industry.
Dan Gamrot, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Hartlepool, is gaining vital on-site experience at the Bevan Square development, led by believe housing in partnership with builder T Manners & Sons Ltd and subcontractor Buildroute Ltd.
Building Skills on Site
Dan began his bricklaying apprenticeship with believe housing last September, combining four days a week of practical work with one day at Hartlepool College of Further Education. Based in the housing association’s Property Repairs Team, he has already been learning to build garden walls, repoint brickwork, and carry out chimney repairs.
To broaden his experience early on, believe housing’s Development Team secured Dan a placement on the Murton construction site—giving him valuable exposure to new-build housing delivery.
“Being on a new-build site shows me a different world,” said Dan.
“I’m really learning a lot. The team here has made it easier, and it’s good to see homes take shape from the ground up. I’ll pass these houses years from now and feel proud, knowing I helped build them.”
Investment in Housing = Investment in People
The Murton scheme is a strong example of how affordable housing development supports the wider economy. Research shows that every £1 invested in social housing generates £2.84 in economic return, boosting jobs and local growth.
“It’s brilliant to see Dan gaining this kind of experience so early in his career,” said Mark Dunn, Repairs Team Leader at believe housing.
“Nothing beats site work for learning trades—he’ll build his confidence, learn to work under pressure, and gain skills that will benefit our customers long-term.”
Supporting the Future Construction Workforce
believe housing and its contractors share a commitment to developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople—a crucial priority as the sector tackles both a skills shortage and the need for more affordable homes.
“believe housing’s approach to in-house talent development matches our own,” said Chris Sinclair, Contracts Manager at T Manners & Sons Ltd.
“We’re proud to support Dan and help deliver much-needed affordable homes for local families.”
