Tilbury Douglas has been appointed by Wigan Council to lead the next stage of the restoration of Haigh Hall, a Grade II* listed building in Greater Manchester.

The contractor will initially work with the council, the Haigh team and the specialist design team during the pre-construction phase, developing detailed plans for the hall’s internal restoration and associated improvements across the estate.

Proposals include landscaping, car park improvements and a new energy centre.

The pre-construction stage will involve further surveys, planning and development of the construction programme and approach for the historic building ahead of the main restoration works.

Pre-construction work to shape restoration plans

The appointment will allow the project team to refine the design and programme while considering the requirements of working on a listed building.

Further investigations will help inform how the restoration is delivered, with the team working collaboratively to develop the plans before construction begins.

Kabir Salihi, regional director for the North West at Tilbury Douglas, said: “We are proud to be working with Wigan Council on the next stage of the transformation of Haigh Hall.

“This is an important heritage project and we look forward to working collaboratively with the Council, design team and wider partners to develop the plans and help bring the vision for this remarkable building to life.

“We are also committed to ensuring the project delivers benefits beyond the restoration itself, creating opportunities for local people, developing skills and supporting businesses as work progresses.”

Haigh Hall restoration forms part of wider regeneration

The restoration aims to establish Haigh Hall as an arts, culture and heritage destination while protecting the historic character of the building.

The project forms part of the wider transformation of the Haigh estate and supports Wigan Council’s Progress with Unity ambitions. The council intends the investment to create opportunities for residents and businesses while strengthening the borough’s heritage, cultural offer and visitor economy.

Further details of the construction programme and main restoration works are expected to develop through the pre-construction phase.
